What is a Business Blog?
By now you’ve heard of blogs, but you probably think they’re mainly used by people who need to vent or share their personal lives for everyone else to see.
It’s true that the Weblog began as an online diary of sorts, often updated daily, that became popular with teens and young adults as a way to share their angst and rail against authority. However, blogs have emerged from their adolescence to become effective tools for reaching large groups of people with a consistent message. It is one of the most popular ways political candidates reach potential voters because it allows readers to feel as if they’re having a conversation with the candidate, getting to know him or her better. Business blogs have that same benefit, in addition to attracting website traffic.
Here’s how it works.
First, some terminology…
- Blog – short for Weblog, it’s the term that describes the online journal that is updated regularly, and that appears as its own web page
- Blogger – the author of the online journal or commentary
- Post – the act of adding content to the blog, usually marked by the date of the addition
Now, say you want to add a blog to your company website. How would you use it?
- Introducing staff or announcing promotions and other staffing changes clients might find interesting (Press Releases)
- Launching products
- Advertising sales or other promotions
- Offering expert advice or how-to tips
- Generating a viral marketing buzz
- Discussing upcoming events or changes
- Anything else that motivates you to connect with potential customers
What’s the advantage?
- Sets you apart from your competitors
- Gives your company a personal face, which is increasingly important in the age of the Internet
- Attracts attention and commentary from other bloggers, which increases your credibility
- Drives new and repeat traffic to your website as you become a resource for them
- Allows you to interact with readers by inviting them to comment, thus encouraging conversation and exchange of ideas
